Crappie Fish

by Amber Singleton

One of the better known crappie fish species is the black crappie, which is also called the calico bass. It is a part of the sunfish family of fish. If you happen to be angling down in Maine, you will immediately realize just how popular the black crappie is, despite the fact that this species has been introduced out of its natural waters into this part of the world.
It is also normal to associate the black crappie as being a part of a school of fish and so you need to be very fast when fishing for it. This means having to indulge in an intense form of fishing to land one, which is why most anglers relish the challenge of catching one of these amazing fish.
However, it is not all that difficult to land a black crappie, which is what makes the crappie fish ideal for fishing for those who want something more out of their fishing experience than landing just the ordinary perch.
As for the size of the black crappie fish, it will measure between half a foot and one foot in length and the weight falls within the range of between one and three pounds. As mentioned before, there are many crappie fish in Maine, and the black variety is plentiful. They are also quite large there, with a typical black crappie measuring fifteen inches in length and weighing more than three pounds.
The reason why the black crappie fish is also called the calico bass is because of its loose resemblance to the bass fish. It also has a narrow as well as deep body form, and its color can change from being olive to even golden brown with some black patches that are found in irregular places on the body.
It is also normal for the black crappie to look for sheltered waters and places such as tiny bays and even coves with shelter. They can be found here especially when they are breeding. However, when days have advanced, the black crappie moves into deeper waters. Therefore, if you are planning on fishing in daytime hours, you need to choose the proper kind of lures.
The best time to fish for black crappie fish is in the early hours of the morning or just as evening sets in because at these times the air is quite cool and the crappie can be found in greater numbers. In any case, if you are a patient angler, you can easily land a black crappie even in the daytime.
While fishing for the black crappie you can use a wide variety of baits with which to lure them to your fishing hook. In fact, you can use live bait in the form of minnows and insects as well as tiny worms that are very appealing as far as the black crappie is concerned. You will also find success by using jigs, spinners, and spoons.
However, it is the time of year that may dictate which bait is best. In the cold winter time you would notice the black crappie to be quite slow and sluggish and thus you would get more success if you used live bait or even jigs. However, when it is dawn or even dusk, you may find the black crappie has moved into shallower waters thus you have more choices in regards to the most suitable kind of lures.
