Airline Seat Upgrade Tips

by Gavin Lapidus

Ever fancied flying business class but without paying first class prices? Why not have a go at using some of these techniques to receive a free upgrade. Unfortunately they're not guaranteed to get you that upgrade, you do need luck on your side too, but it's worth giving it a shot.

Dress smart! - You don't have to dress like a business executive but at the very least dress 'business casual', you are more likely to be upgraded if you don't look too casual.

Join the Frequent Flyer Club before you travel - It may help in your quest for an upgrade, it's usually free and you can start to earn Air Miles immediately even if your quest for a luxurious seat fails.

Be nice! - A smile goes a long way in the travel industry but don't ask too early as staff at the ticket desk are frequently asked to be upgraded, try asking for a seat near the front of the plane as you 'don't like turbulence' or you have walking difficulties, or kindly ask check-in to 'add a code' to your ticket to show that you are potentially eligible for a seat upgrade.

Ask for the bulkhead seat - Families with small children often ask for bulkhead seats as they often have more legroom and carry-cot attachments, with any luck they'll all be taken and you will get upgraded. If they do have the bulk head seats, least you get some extra legroom.

Get Married! - People on their honeymoons always stand a good chance of getting an upgrade. Just make sure you have recently been hitched or at the very least you are accomplished actors as staff can spot fakers a mile off! Be subtle about dropping it into the conversation and be very affectionate to each other.

Use your contacts - If you or a relative work for the airline or as a travel agent then it's worth a mention.

Be patient - Try checking in later if you are on a busy flight, if the flight gets overbooked then there's a chance you might get upgraded. However you may also be transferred to a later flight but then you should get generous compensation and hopefully, a free upgrade.

Haggle - If all else fails why not try and buy an upgrade at a discounted price? The later you leave it the better with this technique and it's possible to get as much as 90% discount.

So there we have it, none of the above tips are guaranteed to get you an upgrade but you can have a lot of fun trying!
