Market For Small Businesses - How To Help Local Businesses While Building Your Own Online Business

by Connie Ragen Green

Helping local small business to have a web presence and to increase their visibility is a worthwhile pursuit. These companies need your help to prosper and grow in the current economic climate, and you can build a nice part-time business for yourself by working with them. The important things to remember are that you already know more about Internet marketing than almost any small business owner you will meet, they do not want to do this for themselves, and this is a business model that will work well for years to come.

The first thing I like to do when I meet with a small business owner is to ask them about their blog. It is extremely rare for a local business to blog, yet this is the fastest way to put them on page one for their keywords. You can set up a WordPress site for them and add some content on a regular basis to achieve this goal. I like to promise two posts a month and then deliver three or four so they will see that I am the right person to help them.

Another way to boost their rankings is by posting to a forum, such as Active Rain. This is an excellent way to boost search engine rankings, to connect with complimentary businesses, and to have a valuable link back to their main site with your signature file.

Most small businesses today have a website that was created for them. It is usually not a good one, so my goal is to boost up the rankings for their site without changing anything that is already there. This can be achieved with content blogging, article marketing, press releases, and social media marketing.

You may have so much fun marketing for these companies that you actually forget that you are doing this as a job. Also, you will spend much more time getting everything set up for them during the first month than you will after that, so ask new clients to spend a minimum of six months with your service.

Video is another way to increase business and make the phone ring for these small businesses. I like to spend an hour at their office making a series of one to two minute videos with my Flip camera, and then dripping them out to YouTube and other sites once a week for the next few months. This means that I only visit them in person once every three or four months.

Marketing for local businesses is the best way to build a solid business while helping others in the process. This is truly a win-win opportunity.
