Wear Rings
The sliding movements, that is, a piston in a tube, risks metal to metal contact which will damage the surface and the seals. Therefore piston and rod need to be supported by precision guiding elements like wear rings, wear bands or guide rings.
Many pumps, including many dry pit non clog and industrial end suction pumps that are fitted with semi-open impellers are fitted with a means to adjust the shaft (and therefore the impeller) axially, thereby moving the impeller closer to the suction side of the casing. This mitigates the recirculation, but does move the impeller forward in the case, thereby opening the gap in the back, possibly allowing contaminants free access to the shaft and seal, and moving the impeller discharge position within the case (increasing the turbulence in the pump). Utilization of low cost wear rings to protect other more expensive components is a much more acceptable solution to many users, and has become an industry standard.
Wear rings are, simply, rings of material that are affixed to either the case (volute) or impeller to protect that portion of the pump. These rings can be defined as a device used to seal the pressure leakage of the liquid between the inlet of the impeller and the pump casing. They are typically found on sewage pumps with closed impellers. A similar device that serves the same function called a wear plate can be found on some pumps with a semi open impeller.
The typical reason for using a wear ring is to decrease the amount of leakage loss around the impeller. Due to more work available to push the pumped liquid out the discharge there is a slight improvement in pump efficiency. This becomes important as the pump size and pressure is increased but not as important on small pumps up to 15 brake horsepower. The function of the wear ring is to help keep the piston centered, which allows for even wear and pressure distribution on the seals. Popular wear ring materials include glass filled Nylon, bronze filled PTFE, glass filled PTFE, Phenolic and PEEK. These rings are used in both piston and rod applications. Wear rings are available in butt cut, angle cut and step cut styles.
