How To Make Nutritional Homemade Carp Fishing Boilies And Superior No Egg Baits!
Carp fishing is great, but having big success in terms of catching loads of big carp is really fantastic! This is possible especially when you know what you are doing and using your very own homemade baits to catch strings of new personal best fish! There is nothing like this special feeling and using readymade baits cannot compare! Empower yourself and catch loads more big carp by making superior homemade baits right now!
The biggest edge is being different, teamed with knowing how to apply bait in ways which do not satiate fish and stimulate maximum feeding responses in the moment, when you are actually fishing. To truly achieve this you must know how and why your baits work, how fish function internally and externally in context. You need to know because otherwise you are just guessing, winging it because you cannot hope to optimise your baits and fishing situations and maximise feeding opportunities without this understanding.
I have been recommending homemade bait makers create baits without eggs for about 12 years now. Egg is the number one most used ingredient in carp bait world-wide, but in readymade baits world-wide. This is really because it is a profitable option and eggs when combined with carbohydrate binding ingredients produces an extrudable dough which is easy to mold in bait rolling machines to form boilies at maximum speed for maximum profit.
Unfortunately eggs happen to not be exceptionally stimulatory to carp, especially when baits are boiled and egg becomes unreactive with water! Once you boil or steam egg then you can leave an egg intact in water for an entire year. I find this absolutely incredible, because frankly it means not only can such baits sit on the bottom uneaten for many months souring swims, but also that the entire premise of bait function is that there are soluble and reacting with water so that they can be best detected and trigger feeding!
The very best baits I make do not contain eggs and are soluble right from the core. The ways bait solution moves through water and is detected and how saline solution for instance and mineralized salts act, compared to blood factors moving through cell walls isotonically and additives which can improve such functions, can all play massively important parts in great homemade bait design for superior catches!
Carp fishing is dominated by a fixation with fish weights. But in Japan other factors matter far more. I mean I consider the condition of fish to be the paramount value measurement, not weight. Weight is meaningless in many ways.
So much about carp fishing smacks of ego. How big is your best fish? How big are the carp in this lake? Are they over thirty pounds. Many newer anglers are so fixated they just want to catch carp over thirty, while missing the bigger picture, the incredibly huge benefits of actually learning massively more by catching far more fish of many weights.
Of course the almost inevitable question comes when you catch a big fish or lots of them. What bait are you using mate? I find that when I say I use my own homemade baits then anglers on the bank mostly get irritated and insist I use their favourite brand of readymade boilies even when they are being out-fished. I find the entire psychology of the bait and mass consciousness mass hypnosis machine to big a massive hindrance to the actual success of so many anglers.
What flavour is your bait is one of the commonest questions in carp fishing. Yet far more important is how do flavours react with water, how do carp detect them and how and why do carp move towards such a stimulant in order to test it. Further still and more important still is does a flavour or combination of substances actually induce oral feeding i.e. where your hook actually goes in the mouth!
For me this is the Holy Grail and has been a focus of my research for over a decade in seeking the truth of what defeats best known brands of readymade baits and teaching this in my one to one bait tuitions in addition to my bait secrets ebooks.
There are many aspects of baits which can be optimised and maximised by going back in time and beginning again without using limiting thinking and with using thinking out of the box to actually improve baits dramatically!
There is a massive machine behind the mentality of making egg-sealed boilies. Originally eggs were used merely to help make paste baits more resilient to unwanted attentions of nuisance fish so they lasted actually on the hook longer. Then this was expanded when it was realised that heating eggs made baits firm and hard and made baits last much longer. But these practical aspects have nothing to do with stimulating fish; they are just involved in creating a hook delivery system.
Years ago volumes of baits were not used and the mentality of more bit equals more fish did not exist and that mentality is inaccurate. The reason why anglers used handfuls of paste baits, even single paste baits, is because they caught fish. This is why in the early days of the bait industry those few packets of readymade bait powders, made using no egg, and water, using high protein ingredients, were not sold in 1, 3, 5, or 10 kilogram bags, but in 10 ounce bags!
More bait does not equal more fish; it’s simply an illusion!
In truth bait is really all about maximizing actually getting hook bait pick ups. In fact the more free bait you use in so many situations, the more chance your hook bait will be sorted, or fish will be satiated, or evolve feeding behaviours which use free baits as a reference point to more easily sort your hook baits!
I used to use big amounts of baits but only up to about 12 years ago. I do not find it is the best way in today’s fishing context where so much free bait is constantly bombarding fish all the time!
In the early days of Richworth freezer readymade baits and even when fish meals used in huge volumes had been used for a while it still came down to the same thing; sound bait design defeats volume. I found that using egg-sealed baits boiled and used in volumes years ago worked, fishing over reasonable beds of whole egg-sealed boilies worked well. But then there was a context involved, where this was simply a method new to the fish.
These days if you fish whole egg-sealed boilies on many waters fish simply ignore them and are resistant to them for days. Many anglers even use methods like washing out their baits in lake water or scalding them in boiling lake water to wash them out faster. It is very obvious that where anglers must do this to get bites within the first night instead of waiting perhaps 3 days or even a week, the actual bait concept has a very big problem because it has become actually repellant!
Yet anglers all over the UK and Europe and elsewhere still fish using egg-sealed boilies and expect to catch fish within hours on waters where fish are so wary of such objects that they refuse to even touch them, until baits have begun to be broken down by the anaerobic bacteria in the lake bed. It is hugely significant that this waiting is more than waiting for baits to wash out of solvent-based flavours for instance. It is in part a marker to show these volumes of free baits are safe and in general are not attached to hooks!
The human side of it is that anglers tend to believe in their human perceptions rather than investigate how carp actually sense substances and detect their baits and experience them. There is a huge difference in neurological wiring between the body and brain of carp and the body and brain of a human. Sensitivities are completely different too!
For instance butyric acid is detected by humans at 10 parts per million, yet carp can detect butyric acid in parts per trillion. If you do not understand why this difference is so significant and how to exploit such differences then you are just using bait blindly because you are not optimising your baits to maximum effect in each unique fishing situation and seasonal period.
In 1973 published scientific research concluded that for humans hen eggs represented the most complete food, (for humans!) Many anglers who were fixated on finding an ultimate nutritional bait to supply all dietary requirements of carp, latched onto this and have remained fixated on this ever since.
The primary reason that so-called food baits represent something fish will consume repeatedly is because they are a condensation of nutrition and other factors which save carp energy!
It’s like instead of expending energy browsing and hunting an entire lake for each source of nutrition they find lots of it (though not all of it) within little round balls of various amino acid profiles, taste flavours colours etc, normally often introduced in the same spots in swims day after night after night,
But the fact is that egg is not the great solution it is supposed to be! One alternative of a number that I use and teach about in my tuitions are certain hydrolysed proteins. But for readymade bait makers these are a far less profitable option. This is just one reason why eggs though drastically less effective than other substances are used still used for the profit motive as much as anything else (apart from closed-mindedness!)
Eggs are used in readymade baits for a few reasons mostly to do with convenience, costing, roller and bait materials sticking problems, extrusion and molding and holding of shape properties, production practicality and speed in producing baits made for maximum profit. Egg-bound baits are in general easy to roll in bait rolling machines in a huge variety of base mixes.
They are in some ways ideal for the business model of making money in carp bait. But for me, they are simply a limiting factor, especially when boiled or steamed becoming insoluble compared to other binders which are instead, still very water-soluble when heated and are actually exceptionally stimulatory to carp!
But baits made for profit are a very different paradigm compared to uniquely potent homemade baits truly made to trigger oral feeding in the moment!
Eggs are probably most-used of all for their pliability and moldability properties as in when extruded, shaped on bait rollers, and heated keeping their shape. Of course egg baits stay intact in most bait recipes for well over 12 hours. This means they are still on the rig when the angler fishes a night and reels in to find bait still on in the morning. I do things differently because personally I much prefer to have a big fish on instead!
