Candle Types

by Felecia Cortes

Candles come in all sizes and shapes., but not all candles are created equal. There are a large number of discount candles available. Like most other things you normally get exactly what you pay for. What most people are looking for in a candle is one that will burn clean, melt completely and of course give off fragrance.

Proper candle burning To burn correctly the candle must have the correct size wick sized for that particular candle. A wick too large will cause the candle to burn to quickly with a very large dirty flame. A wick too small will not completely burn all the wax, leaving an outer ring of wax in the candle container. The size of the wick required varies with the type of wax, the amount of fragrance even the fragrance chosen. Also you must always keep the wick properly trimmed to Π. The amount of fragrance throw is dependent on of course the amount of fragrance added to the candle, the size of the pool of wax and the type of wax used. Adding too much fragrance to a candle will result in a candle that does not burn. Adding too little fragrance results in a candle with little fragrance throw. High quality fragrances and high quality waxes are more expensive then low quality. So it is less costly to produce a cheap candle.

A good quality candle should burn for many hours, burn completely leaving a clean container and if the wick is trimmed properly burn very cleanly.

Waxes Candle waxes come in a number of varieties. Container candle wax is normally soft made to cling to the jar giving a smooth appearance when seen though the jar. The softer wax normally gives a high fragrance throw. Waxes are rated by their throw and their ability to hold fragrance and still burn properly.

Pillar wax normally is a harder wax, the wax is made to hold the shape of a pillar candle the candle should burn down the center leaving an outer shell as it burns. Votive candles are very similar to pillar candles but made to burn in a properly sized votive container. Pillar and votive candle waxes are made hard to allow it to properly drop cleanly out of a pillar or votive mold when manufactured. Tea light candles are normally manufactured out of a pillar or votive wax.

A different type candle is the wickless candle. This candle is produced in a container similar to a container candle. The wickless candle is produced without a wick and is made to melt on a candle warmer. The advantage of a wickless candle is that more fragrance can be added without the worry of the fragrance drowning the wick putting out the flame, as is the case with wicked candles. The wickless candle has a very high fragrance throw and when used with an electric candle warmer melts without flame. This makes the wickless candle safe to use in areas that restrict an open flame such as at the workplace or in dorm rooms.

As with any candle they should not be melted or burned un-attended and not left in the vicinity of small children or pets.
