When we think about fear, we know that it is a natural instinct of the humans when we are facing dangerous and threatening situations. The fear will trigger the adrenaline flows that prepare our bodies to fight for our survival or to escape from the danger. This is what normally termed as the fight or flight reaction. This is almost inherent in our normal lives that the reaction will kick in during times of danger or fear of threats. Nevertheless, when this reaction leads to a prolonged state of fear that cannot be removed, it suggests possible panic attacks occur.
Panic attacks instigate extreme and exaggerated fear and disability that are more than the normal feeling of fear. The severity of panic attacks and its sudden and episodic attacks are so chronic and intense that when it happens, there is hardly anything that can be done to eliminate it. These attacks are often self provoking without any events or conditions that pose danger or threats to that persons mind. Hence, no rational explanation can be offered for such fight or flight reaction triggered by panic attacks.
Several physical symptoms of panic attacks can be identified which include heart racing, pounding or skipping heartbeat, tightness or discomfort in chest region, choking sensation, sweatiness, shaking and trembling, butterflies and nausea, hot flashes or chills, numbness in certain parts of the body, erratic breathing or shortness of breath, dizziness, light-headedness and so forth. The psychological emotions felt by these victims can be very damaging and frightening that they, who suffer panic attacks, can feel that they are dying or losing their minds. Things seem unreal to them or may even feel that they are detached from their bodies while some are so fearful that they must escape and flee the situation altogether.
When a person experiences or perceives a dangerous or risky encounter, the above symptoms are stimulated. However, panic attacks hit a person under no apparent threats or dangers in an intense manner physically and mentally. The chain reaction of fearful thoughts, escalating physical responses and feelings of terror and desperation are all underway. This can happen at anytime and any place in the absence of any stimuli even when a person is sleeping at night.
It is easy to understand why panic attacks can be so upsetting and life altering because when panic attack happens to a person, there are no means to stop the attack at all as there no early warning signs that can be noted to prevent its occurrence. The feeling of fear and extreme terror and disability together with the intensifying physical reactions stimulated in an environment of disproportionate imbalances of adrenalines and hormones production and flows has to be controlled with various means of treatments alternatives.
The victim of panic attacks suffer enormous amount of terror and fear during the attack and their terrors can be so intense that the attack seems like forever even though only few minutes have passed.
The surreal experience and sheer terror of the panic attacks almost defy description in the sense that they are so intense that the disorder will plague the person forever. Frightened to be judged as crazy by other people, some victims choose to keep silent about their symptoms. Others decide to take control of their life so that their lives can be free of these terrifying attacks.
