Finding a Way To Get Away From It All In Key West

by Jack Terry

People may be getting more vacation days as part of their benefits package, but fewer of them are taking actual vacations anymore. The computers that were supposed to make our lives easier now mean we are tied more to work than ever before. Ironically, people start to feel guilty about taking a week off at a time because they feel they will be letting their co-workers down. If this is you, then the best suggestion is to start small. Plan a long weekend to the one place to that is easy to get to while still getting you away from it all: Key West, Florida.

It starts with the ease of getting there. Many airlines offer several flights a day, most with only one connection and a few even direct. Once landed, all of the resorts and hotels are within a 15 minute taxi ride. Other vacation spots require a car to get around with, but so much of what Key West has to offer is located so close together that a leisurely stroll will take you where you need to be. Of course, if you are feeling adventurous and want to fit in with the locals, there are many bicycle rental shops to choose from.

The best way to jump start any relaxation is with some pampering in a spa. Treat yourself to a massage followed by a facial, or indulge yourself with a steam bath and a salt scrub, all while surrounded by the fragrance of local native flowers and plant life. Before you know it, all the stress of the real world will have just melted away. A restful vacation is about indulging your taste buds as well. Some of the finest chefs from around the world have made Key West restaurants their home, and the island is known for their New Island Cuisine. This style of dining combines traditional methods of food preparations with the local seafood, fruits and spices, resulting in light flavorful dishes that cannot be found anywhere else. Being surrounded by the vibrant waters of the Caribbean means that the seafood is as fresh as it can ever be, and no meal is complete without the signature dessert: key lime pie.

Rested, relaxed and fed, now it is time to check out part of what makes Key West so famous: its nightlife. Every night after gathering to watch the sunset at historic Mallory Square, people venture off to enjoy a cold cocktail, listen to live music, see a magic show and dance the night away. From live jazz and rock and roll to quiet singer/songwriters and DJs spinning the latest hits, you will be able to find the perfect spot to end the first night of your long weekend vacation. You earned it.
