5 Simple Ways for Renewing You Marriage Vows

by Patricia Strasser

You can think of renewing your vows of marriage if you and your partner are about to celebrate your 50th year of being married. A vow renewal celebration is one of the best 50th anniversary gifts you and your spouse can have, and it will also commemorate all your years of marriage. Here are some steps to follow if you are thinking of renewing your wedding vows:

Choose what type of ceremony you want

Like when you are planning a wedding, your first step should be to consider what type of celebration you want to have. This step entails choosing between a grand celebration with many guests, or just a simple ceremony with just you and your spouse and a small number of selected guests. A grand celebration obviously is more expensive but you will be able to invite more people. However, uncomplicated vow-renewal ceremonies make for a more intimate setting where you can concentrate on the romantic and sentimental aspects of the celebration. When you make this decision, you need to consider your preference and the budget you have set.

Choose a date

When you already know the type of event, you can talk to your spouse and pick a suitable date. You can either set the date of the event on the exact day of your anniversary or another time which is more convenient for the both of you. Make sure there is sufficient time to prepare for the event especially if you want it to be elaborate.

Choose a venue

There are couples who want to celebrate their vow renewal ceremony on the same place they held their wedding while others prefer having it at a new location. When choosing the location, keep your budget in mind and contact the site ahead of time to reserve it.

Choose who you want to officiate the ceremony

Since vow renewal ceremonies are more typically symbolic celebrations than legally binding affairs, there is no specific rule on who can officiate it. You can request a judge or member of the clergy to officiate the ceremony. If you want to conduct a less formal and more personal event, you can ask one of your closest friends or one of your adult children to handle the ceremony. Make sure you let the person you have chosen know the details of the occasion in advance so you can coordinate and prepare for it together.

Send out the invitations

After you get the details and arrangements finalized, you're ready to start sending your invitations. If the location of the event will be out of town, the invitations should be sent out about a month in advance to give your guests enough time to prepare.

There are many great ways to celebrate your anniversary as a couple. Just remember to pick the one that will make the affair most unforgettable.
