Tips to Better Internet Privacy

by Mark Stankovich

Security and Internet Privacy go hand in hand when it comes to surfing the internet. They are actually inseparable. If you want to be secure on the web, then you must be concerned about your privacy. Cybercriminals are real, and they lurk about, trying to find ways to take what is rightfully yours from you. What you need to know is how to protect yourself and your personal data while browsing. Here are a few of the ways to protect what is important to you.

1. Steer clear of accessing personal information or e-mail on a publicly accessed computer. This could be at your school, library, or anywhere that offers a computer for internet usage. This information could easily be tracked, and there is a good chance that the network is less than secure. If you absolutely have to use a public computer, make sure you have not saved any of your passwords, and that you clear your cache, history and cookies. This is not foolproof, but will lessen the chances that you will have your personal data compromised.

2. If you are using a public computer to frequent a chat room or post to mailing lists or newsgroups, it is imperative that you do this from a secondary account you have set up. Only use your main account on lesser sites that are usually for members-only. Any address posted on a public space can easily be spammed, and added to a plethora of junk mail applications. Ideally, for accessing websites from public computers you would use an account that is dispensable at any given moment.

3. Try to educate yourself a bit about the pieces of information called "cookies" are. There's a "hint": The whole process of collecting data is the very similar to what the background check industry uses. These are pieces of information that a website will store on your system. Before you enter data on a site that is asking to put cookies on your system, take a peek at their privacy policy. Some nefarious websites will not only gather and use your data, but will sell it to other third parties. All the current browsers have an option to be configured in accepting some cookies, while rejecting others.

This list contains only a few of the steps, however basic, you can take in order to protect your privacy when browsing the Internet. It is obviously a far larger topic than we could cover here, but it is a good start. The regular Internet user is relatively clueless about the dangers they expose themselves to in the cyberworld.
