Computer Network Installation Guide
A lot of planning, a little foresight and this installation guide can help you create the most efficient computer network for your organization. A must for any business today, a network links all computers and other equipment in an organization so the employees can share resources and information, enabling them to work as an efficient and cohesive team.
There are five main stages and considerations involved in installing a network: 1. Planning & preparation: This first stage requires you to take stock of how many people would access the network – how many locally from within the office and how many from other locations (remote access). Also count how many computers and other equipment (printers, scanners, servers) would be connected to the network. Don’t forget to plan for more users and computers in the future. Determine the scope of the network – local area network, citywide, countrywide or international. 2. Hardware & software: Decide on what type of hardware – including back-up equipment, routers, servers and uninterruptible power supply- would be connected to the network. Check whether your hubs and switches have enough ports to support the required number of connections. Choose an operating system and make sure you have the license to run that software across the network. Choose cabling that supports high speeds, install it and test it. Begin training your staff to use the network efficiently. 3. Backup & security: Decide how data will be backed up across the network, where and for how long. Also choose the security measures you will put in place like anti-virus software and firewalls. 4. Network design: This depends on the layout of your office. If the network will be small, you could go for a ring, bus, mesh or star network design depending on the topology. But if the network is large and complex, you might need to combine two or more basic network technologies. 5. Support: A network is only as good as the team supporting it. Without able support and management, a network could fail or crash frequently, creating more problems than it solves. Decide whether you want to support your network using dedicated in-house staff or you prefer to outsource the job.
