Even Professional Athletes Go To A Pro Fitness Trainer

by Jack Terry

The football season on paper may only last from late August to early January - or early February if your team is good and lucky - but to be competitive in the sport, the players do not spend the rest of the time just sitting around their house eating cake and watching television. They need to be able to stay at their peak physical level, and they know that they cannot do it on their own. They have enough to do keeping up on their playbooks that they do not have the time to learn about the newest exercises and the latest techniques. That is why they spend their offseason working out in a pro athlete gym with professional trainers.

Many of these gyms and trainers can be found in Miami because, well, why not? If your job required you to be outside in Buffalo in December, you would probably want to head to South Florida the first chance you could, too. The athletes are not just going there to enjoy some fun in the sun, however. They are there to work, and it is the workout programs they take part in that are helping to create the same regimens that personal trainers are taking to their clients all across the country.

One of the newest trends that people are embracing is the bootcamp. Bootcamp classes in Miami started with these off season athletes needing to have a comprehensive workout. Traditional forms of weightlifting focused on specific muscle groups separately. Professional trainers saw these exercises as counterproductive for the football players who, in the course of a ten second play on the field, have to demonstrate strength, speed and dexterity all at the same time. They needed to find a way to train a body to be able to do all those things at once. That was when many of them started looking at the military and their eight week bootcamp for new recruits. With resources and freedoms that the Army does not have, these trainers started to create exercises and schedules that would challenge their clients. By constantly shifting the focus of the exercises, they helped to develop all of the skills that the players need to be at the peak of their performance. Plus, by building these exercises into an eight week program, the athletes could fit them into their increasingly busy schedules.

It would certainly be nice to take eight weeks every winter to attend fitness classes in Miami. Seeing as how that is a challenge for most people, at least we have the next best thing: the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of our favorite athletes and have the same effective bootcamp workouts they do. Too bad they do not come with the same salary.
