Team and Pro Sports Apparel: How Nike Is Changing The Game
What Has Nike Done To Revolutionize Sports Apparel? Nike has started a revloution in the licensed sports industry with the fresh quality of their products. In 2004 the licensed division of Nike, also know as Nike Team Sports, developed a product line engineered to offer sports fans a better version of the cheap screen-printed jerseys that they had owned in the past. In doing so Nike created a surge in college sports apparel by offering a jersey that featured sewn or embroidered letters and numbers. The material used is referred to as tackle twill. This same technique and material being used is what you will find on an authentic jersey worn on the field or court in the NFL and NBA. In an effort to offer such a great looking apparel option Nike forced other companies in their field to follow suite. In 2004 Reebok, the official outfitter for the NFL, came out with their own version to satisfy the hungry NFL fans and named it the Replithentic jersey. These jerseys have continued to grow in popularity and number over the last 3 years. Each year the reports show an increase in sales for these jerseys over the screen-print replica jerseys. In 2007 Nike went a step further with their design. The initial 2004 design was for one layer printed lettering. The new product line for 2007 features up to 3 separate layers of tackle twill lettering as opposed to the printed sewn on lettering. With this change and a $5.00 increase in the overall retail price of the jersey; they now have a perfect masterpiece to present to those avid fans. Not only has the lettering changed, but the overall construction of the jersey now features insets and designs to closely resemble the jerseys that are worn by the players. It is certain that Nike intends on maintaining their hold on the college football world. Recently Nike has taken a small hit on some of the sponsored schools they once had. Between Adidas and Under Armour, Nike has lost some of its exposure in college football. With the addition of the new quality and structure of the twill college football jerseys Nike plans to maintain their stature and hopefully promote the high quality of their products even more.
