Samsung I8000 Review– A Wonderful Device with Amazing Features

by Jerry Smith

As a customized windows mobile phone, Samsung i8000 aka Omnia II is bolder and bigger than its precedcessor with notable improvements in the TouchWiz interface. I8000 features the fastest processor and makes using the interface much easier. The Samsung I8000 measures 118 x 59.6 x 12.3mm and it weighs 123g. The 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery supports 12 hours of 2G talk time and 8 hours of 3G talk time and guarantees 430 hours of standby time.

The huge 3.7 inches resistive touch screen makes Samsung i8000 a really winner and get much attention. The central cube key looks very cute along with the send and the end keys. The AMOLED screen shows brilliant and vivid images. The screen displays 65k colors, which is quite disappointing considering that other low end mobile phones can display 16 million colors. The plastic finish of the phone is another disappointing feature because the phone deserves more than that.

The 5MP camera in the I8000 also has a surprising element. It features a dual LED flash and takes decent pictures. The videos taken using the camera are of DVD quality and slow motion recording videos are obtained at QVGA resolution. If you love fiddling with the mobile phone camera, then you would like to take the I8000 as the camera since it has a variety of features. You can adjust almost anything and ensure that the camera takes pictures in the way you prefer.

The TouchWiz interface is the biggest unique selling point for the Samsung I8000. The menu is distinct from other windows mobile phones you have ever seen. The home screen and start menu are updated. And the menus are quite convenient so that you don’t need use the stylus. There are four start menus screens that can be customized with the widgets you prefer. Each page can be renamed and you can switch to the pages you choose using finger swipes. However, there is absence of gestures which is a little disappointing. The PIM applications are also revamped, much to surprise of everyone.

The Samsung I8000 features excellent music and video players. The sound quality is especially very good and customization options are available. Various audio and video formats are supported by the Omnia II. FM radio is another interesting option for music lovers. There is an onboard video editor, but there are limitations to using this application. A 3D cube interface well known among the Samsung smart mobile phone users is used to manage multimedia applications with the I8000 too .

Though lacks QWERTY keyboard, the Samsung i8000 makes great effort to complete the onscreen keyboard, so it is quite easier to send SMS, MMS and email. Even though the I8000 is a quad band GSM device, it supports 3G networks too. Bluetooth is great for data transfer between compatible devices. For your web needs, you should use the Opera mobile browser with limited features. Full flash support was much anticipated, but it is not present in the Samsung I8000.

The Samsung I8000 boasts of a couple of extra applications in the windows mobile phone. DNLA connected home lets you access music libraries in remote computers. The streaming player is useful for streaming videos. The RSS reader and Podcast reader are greatly helpful for those who want to keep themselves updated. The communities’ option lets you connect to Facebook, Flickr, Myspace, Picasa, Photobucket and Friendster. GPS programs can also be used with the Samsung I8000. A smart reader is an interesting application that can be used for practical purpose. Since it is a windows mobile phone, it goes without saying that you will get an office mobile suite.
