Getting Kids to Exercise
We've read and heard about the rising problems with kids who are overweight. Kids are facing health problems that they never had to before. The reasons for this are that kids don't eat right and they tend to lead more sedentary lives. Kids don't to out and run around any more. TV, computers, and video games are their favorite activities now. By spending so much time sitting, kids don't get as much exercise as they need.
So, how do you tear your child away from the computer, video game, or TV? The one thing you don't want to do is constantly nag them to exercise. It's more important to help them find activities that will be fun for them while requiring more physical activity. Think about it, do you want to exercise on a treadmill for hours? Of course not, so don't expect your child to want to do it, either. But what about a hike in the mountains? A bike ride around the neighborhood? A game of tag in the back yard? All of these activities can get your child moving.
The key is to find fun activities that your child will enjoy doing. Just like you, if he or she enjoys the activities, they'll want to keep doing them. Activities with other children will help teach social and team skills. Activities with you will allow you to spend time with your child and form a stronger bond (and don't forget that you'll be getting some exercise in as well!).
Some activities you can do with your child include:
* Tag
* Badminton
* Softball
* Pool games
* Trips to the museum
* Touring local tourist attractions
* Playing Frisbee
* Walking the dog
* Visiting the zoo
* Tug of war
* Snorkeling
* Sledding
*Making snow angels
You know best what your child is interested in, so find activities that include their interests and they'll be thrilled to participate. As you know, when a child is engaged in an activity that captivates them, you won't be able to tear them away from it.
It is extremely important to that kids get enough physical activity in their lives. Finding activities that they enjoy will help make sure they stick with being active on a regular basis. And, when they stay active, they'll be healthier!
