Water Filters Explained
The basics of home water filters
If you are looking for a home water filter it can be difficult to know where to start. There are many different types of home water filters, each more confusing than the next! In this article I'll take you through some of the most common types so you can make an informed decision.
The primary purpose of home water filters is to remove any metals or chemicals that may effect the taste or safety of the water. In most cases in the UK and US the main reason for having a filter in the house is make the water taste as fresh as possible, but in other countries the safety of the water may be another issue that the filter needs to solve.
You may not know that there are many kinds of filters, each doing their job in a different way. Here are several:
Reverse Osmosis - These use a pressure system that results in extremely pure water, on the same level as distilled water. Again, it removes potentially helpful minerals so may not be the healthiest option.
Carbon Filters - water is put through carbon which filters out any impurities in it. These don't provide as pure water as the previous two filters, but do leave the minerals intact. However they can't change the acidity of the water in any way.
Water Distillers - These work by boiling the water and then collecting all the steam and turning it back into drinking water. This kills any harmful bacteria, but also takes out important minerals in the water.
These are the main choices of water filter, each providing a different method and different results. When buying a water filter you need to take into account exactly what you want it to do so you can be sure that it works in the way that you need. Also look up reviews on the internet so that you can gauge how effective a particular filter is.
