Having adequate exit sign lighting in your building is essential to worker safety and in fact to comply with the Australian Building Code Standards. And you must ensure that your signs are working properly so having the batteries checked is vital. There are many decent suppliers of exit signage which supply the sign with the batteries fitted. However, there is nothing wrong with havng a few spare NiCad batteries in the building just in case one of your signs goes out. And you can purchase these NiCad batteries from you electrical wholesaler or at the time your signs are installed or serviced.
Building Codes in Australia require that an exit sign must be installed in order to to meet all requirements listed in the appropriate Australian Standard. Exit signs must be visible, in fact the code says clearly visible to all persons who are approaching an exit.
Exit signage must be positioned or located where the exit out of an office floor, walkway or passageway or a building exits are not obviously apparent, For example the many places where this is i.e. corridors, hallways and lobby areas.
Signs must have have arrows that direct persons to an exit. They must be located on, above or adjacent to every door providing entry and exit commonly referred to as egress. Exit signs will be identified with legible writing with the use of letters and symbols of being of adequate size to ensure that the sign is clearly visible to all persons in the that vicinity. All exit signage must be automatic in its operation and in the event of a failure of power supply to the main lighting system the signs must also have battery back-up or a power back up system.
Building Codes and Australian Standards apply to the installation and maintenance of Exit Lighting systems: These Australian Standards Codes are AS2293.1, 2005 Emergency evacuation and lighting in buildings. System design, installation and operation. AS2293.2, 1995 Emergency evacuation and lighting in buildings. Inspection and maintenance. AS2293.3, 2005 Emergency evacuation and lighting in buildings. Emergency luminaries and exit signs.
Building Code of Australia (as amended to date). Class 2 to Class 9 Buildings, Section E. Maintenance obligations and maintenance to the system ideally should be carried out each six months by authorised persons with the appropriate qualifications and experience applicable to this type of work. At the completion of inspections all identified problems or deficiencies in the system will be fixed as soon as is practical.
