What Would Happen If They Banned Cannabis Seeds?
No more weed seed collecting for you…
The buying, selling and distribution of cannabis seeds has grown in to rather a large business around the world. There are many many websites, shops and catalogues available where you can buy all different strains of these tiny seeds for whatever purpose. Some buy them in order to grow them in countries where it is legal to do so, some buy them because they like to collect things like that, while others buy them to stock up in hope that one day they will be able to grow them legally.

For whatever reason people buy them, it is currently legal to do so in the UK along with many other countries. But what would happen if they suddenly passed a law that made it illegal to buy, sell or own them?

Websites would go out of business

For a start, a whole heap of websites would be forced out of business. This would be because people stop buying them for fear of getting caught, because it is illegal and they want to stick to the law or because they continued to try and sell them until the police forced them to shut down. This would mean that many people would lose their jobs and a large amount of income would be lost. Some cannabis seed websites rake in almost £300,000 which would certainly cover a large amount of wages also. For some sites they may survive by selling a range of cannabis paraphernalia but they would certainly not make nearly as much as they would have done through selling seeds.

It would go underground

While outlawing cannabis seeds would put a dent in a range of legitimate businesses, it would more than likely increase the income of many underground ones. There are indeed plenty of ways for people to buy fully grown cannabis these days so it is unlikely there would be any difficulty for these people to start catering for the cannabis seed market too.

For this reason it is unlikely that feminized seeds will be made illegal any time soon. There is more attention paid to the likes of more immediately dangerous drugs such as cocaine, heroin and other class A drugs than some seeds that could potentially be made into a class B drug. Cannabis is the most popular and widely used drug in the UK, despite the fact it is illegal, so banning their seeds is unlikely to hamper its popularity to any great extent. In fact people growing their own plants from these seeds probably keeps the extent to which illegal drug selling gangs operate as people can avoid them altogether.
