Spinal Pain Requiring Spinal Surgery

by Glenn Betz

While there are many ailments and illness which can be cured without surgery, spinal problems can linger for many years before finally requiring specialist spinal surgery. However, there have been some massive advances in spinal surgery and while any surgery does carry a degree of risk, the risks associated with this surgery in the past have been greatly reduced.Spinal pain can be one of the most excruciating types of pain, often hitting suffers when least expected and severely hampering their mobility and standard of life. Even now doctors will not rush into drastic surgery, often requiring a period of alternative treatment for between 3 and 6 months. While the degree of pain and type of condition varies from person to person, some of the more common spinal ailments include:-DiscectomyOften associated with nerve pain; Discectomy is an operation involving spinal surgery to remove one of the discs which is located between each vertebrae. Commonly known as a “herniated” disc, this is one of the most common forms of surgery and has been highly successful if alleviating spinal nerve pain.ForamenotomyAgain associated with nerve pain; this procedure involves removing a portion of actual bone from the spine, which can often act with other bone to “trap” a nerve. This is one of the more painful conditions as there is no where for the nerve to move to, resulting in often constant pain.LaminectomyThis is an operation carried out to relieve actual pressure on the spinal cord, which can manifest itself in conditions such as spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. While it will depend on the amount of bone removed, the procedure can also involve fusing bones together to stabilize the problem area.Spinal FusionOne of the more common of spinal operations, Spinal Fusion is often carried in conjunction with other spinal surgery. The spine is a very delicate element of the body, containing a mass of nerves, bone and tissue and it is often advisable to fuse together certain bone structures to ensure that problem areas are protected from further damage. While the above operations are some of the more common spinal procedures, there have been other advances in spinal surgery over the last few years. It is now possible to alleviate back pain which may have been ongoing for months, if not years, with a simple procedure. Nerve damage and nerve related conditions can often be excruciatingly painful and were often untreatable in the past. There have also been major improvements in physio work, and post-op treatment can often get the patient back to leading a normal life in a short space of time. The back is one of the more delicate areas of the body, although thankfully it is now an area where corrective surgery is possible, and frequently available. Spinal surgery is a lot safer, and more common than in years gone by, so now there is no need to suffer in silence.
