by Pamelina Siow

Children are easily attracted to new things. They eagerly dive into new activities to satisfy their curiosity. Their minds are so much like a sponge that absorbs everything around them. Because they are so flexible and receptive, this is the time that you should introduce them to learning a musical instruments, like the cello. It will further enhance their creativity and rhythmic skills.

Cello lessons for children should be a fun experience. It should hold their interest to ensure better learning. Take the child to a concert where he could see the cello and how it is played or else show him pictures or videos of it to capture his attention. It is better if you'll let him hold and feel the instrument to trigger his interest.

Ask the child directly if he wants to learn the cello but never force a child into something he doesn't want to do because it won't work out well anyway.

Children cello lessons should be just like a game to the child wherein he could play, enjoy and explore, but like a game there should be rules that he needs to follow in order to achieve his goal. Examples are asking them to always listen and do as the teacher says. The child learns the proper way to hold the cello, finger placements, bowing, reading musical notes as well as performing a piece.

You will need to give them constant encouragement, praises and rewards to keep them from being distracted and discouraged. They love varieties and they tend to get tired of doing the same thing over and over again unless they develop a passion for it. This is the most pressing reason while many children drop out of cello lessons.

They will need to put in many hours of practice and so candies, sweets and the like are recommended to keep them motivated to learn. A regular practice routine should also be established to program the child's mind that playing cello is already a part of his daily activities so that he would be well familiarized with it.

Let him perform first pieces of his favorite songs such as nursery rhymes to stimulate his interest and develop his passion. Once his passion is fully developed, let him try a harder piece gradually and monitor his progress. If he is capable of performing it with little or no difficulty and with oozing confidence then he is ready to take the stage and perform in front of the audience.

Children cello lessons will also teach them to handle any situation on stage in addition to skills they need to perform on stage. The child is taught humility in defeat and victory as they face and rise up to the challenges of learning to be a cellist.

Learning to play the cello will give a child versatility. It could serve as a stepping stone to learn different kinds of instruments such as violins, pianos and guitars. Cello is a wonderful instrument for a child to learn for it fosters the child's hidden musical creativity that could bring out the best in him not only in the field of music but also in different aspects of his life.
