A Clean Restroom

by Charley Shimanski

In commercial facilities, dirty restrooms are a reflection of the type service one might receive from the business entity they are a patron of. Many businesses go the extra mile to check and clean their restrooms on an hourly basis. Luxurious facilities may even have a porter present to open doors and keep the patrons served well. Certainly this reflects how one pays attention to detail.

Keeping restrooms clean and sanitary should be the priority of all businesses and decision makers. Even though this is an area where funds are cut short and services reduced especially in these difficult economic times, it may diminish the image of the enterprise.

Here are a handful of tips to consider in keeping restrooms clean. • A restroom can only be clean as the materials that are used to clean it. If dirty water is being used to mop floors, floors will not be very clean. If mop heads are old, raggedy and dirty, they will leave lint behind with streaks etc. that will hinder the appearance. • An untrained staff person may not be as careful to keep up the appearance. It is a good idea to have the same cleaning crew in-charge of cleaning the same area. This prevents blame shifting etc., and one begins to take responsibility for the service they provide. Ownership of a challenge generally will produce a better result. It is important to train the cleaning staff in cleaning efficiently and effectively. • Schedule deep cleaning on a regular and periodic basis. No matter how well attention is paid on a more frequent basis, deep cleaning addresses the areas of corners, grout in tile and hard water deposits etc., that can take a toll on the appearance of any facility. • Germicidal cleaners will assist in keeping a facility clean and prevent the spread of germs, bacteria and viruses. Prevention is certainly better than cure. The use of the proper chemicals will have added benefits and bring enhanced value to the users of the facility. • Signs that encourage the washing of hands for employees can have added benefit in the health of the business as well. Encouraging a culture of cleanliness may have unintended beneficial consequences too. • Cleaning of vents and exhausts in the bathrooms makes a positive difference in the appearance of a restroom. It is easy to notice dirty vents when they are not properly and regularly cleaned.

No matter what business one may be in, we are all users of restroom facilities. When we enter a clean restroom it has a positive or negative impression on us. Making the restrooms clean can have a positive effect even in the midst of the dirtiest jobs in the world. It is a reflection of the care and attention to detail one goes to, to provide excellent customer service.
