Having It All On An Island Vacation In Key West, Florida

by Jack Terry

It is the vacation so many people dream about: a tropical island with white sand beaches and a hammock strung between two palm trees that are gently swaying in the breeze. So relaxing, so rejuvenating, and - for most people - after a few days, so boring. There certainly are a few people out there who could easily spend a week doing nothing, but for the rest of us, it would be nice to have a different restaurant to check out, a new beach to explore, or just time to experience what life in the tropics is really like. That is the reason why Key West, Florida is the ultimate choice when it comes to tropical island vacations.

Unlike many of the all-inclusive resorts and other hotels that are located throughout the Caribbean, Key West is a fully functioning city, with most of the hotels, inns and other accommodations located in or near all of the activities that the island has to offer. Other resorts on far flung islands are usually built away from other developments, and while that may offer up a spectacular view, it is very limiting when it comes to wanting to do something else.

Even the hotels that are the farthest from the historic old town district of Key West, where many of the Key West restaurants, shops, museums and galleries are located, are only a 15 minute taxi ride away. Most even offer complimentary shuttle service between the property and several downtown locations so there is no worry about renting a car or paying taxi fares. Simply step out of your room, step onto the shuttle, and within minutes you are at the center of it all.

Once downtown, the activities to choose from are as endless as a person's imagination. There are several different charter companies that offer a wide array of sailing and boating options, from sunset wine and cheese cruises to all day adventures featuring snorkeling, parasailing and jet skiing. The 500 year history of Key West is well represented by several museums that cover many of the unique ways that the island republic has survived over the centuries. For those who love to eat and drink, there are over 300 Key West restaurants to choose from and just as many bars, many of which offer live entertainment throughout the day and into the night.

Of course, that dream vacation started with the image of a sandy beach and swaying palm trees, and Key West offers that as well. There are several world class resorts that have their own private beaches, no fewer than a half dozen public beaches to choose from, and plenty of native palm trees to tie a hammock to. When you want to get away from it all but still have it nearby to choose from, Key West, Florida is the perfect island destination.
