Designer Watches and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors

by Mark Etinger

Watch collecting isn't just a hobby that your neighbor or uncle has; it is actually a very large pastime and is always growing. In response to such a widely loved hobby, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors had been set up way back in 1943 by members of Philadelphia's Watchmakers' Guild and the Horological Society of New York. Since then, the association has thousands of members who collect a variety of watches, from designer watches to antiques.

In the NAWCC there are over 160 chapters which are often broken down by interest or location. A popular one is Chapter 2 in New York City, for example. Most chapters are found in the United States but there are some in Canada, Australia, and even Japan. Special interests range from types of designer watches to horological science.

Joining the NAWCC is actually easy for anyone who wants to be a part of it and those who find themselves so dedicated to horology and watch design in general. There is also a school of horology for those who want to learn more about the study of watches and become trained in the way of watch and clock making.

When it comes to actual collections, designer watches have really thrived. Though many people only collect antique and vintage watches, it is much easier to collect a line of watches from a specific designer or of a particular style or material. Collections can range from being all Hublot watches to all rose gold watches from a variety of brands; it is all up to the preference of the collector. These collections are usually a great way to start because it is much easier to find a variety of styles in modern designer watches than to set out and try to find real vintage and antique watches. And those can be far pricier than even the most expensive Patek Philippe watch.

There are plenty of chapters within the NAWCC that focus on specific brands, styles, and even the parts that were used in a watch. And then there are bigger, more blanket chapters. It is a good way to bring enthusiasts together to discuss what they love to collect most, share tips, and share information on reliable sellers or new auctions they've heard about. Becoming a member can not only be a great thing for a collector, but a great gift for someone you know who collects watches and would like to take their hobby even further. ---
