Spelling Tips For ESL Students

by Bryan Carlin

There are many different components to the process of figuring out how to learn to properly speak and write English. Grammar, sentence structure, and conversational flow are all important parts of picking up a new language. It's important for students to first understand these fundamental building blocks before they can continue adding on to their knowledge of the new language. Once these foundations are in place, students can work on their vocabulary, even learning slang terms or figures of speech that they might run across when speaking or writing in English.

Principles behind Communicative Activities. Encouraging students to give a variety of responses both personal and practice using language creatively. Giving students a purpose for using the language. Examples include discussion, games, problem solving and information-gap activities. Organizing activities in pairs or small groups allow the students to use language in private face-to-face interaction

Look into online programs (if your budget permits it) to speed up the process ten fold

Buy English News Papers - Grab yourself a dictionary. Newspapers might probably contain words that you don't understand. Look up them in the dictionary. That's how you get used. Improve your enthusiasm.

Keep a diary of your progress as this is a great way to see and track your progress.

As you learn English online, you should put what you are learning to good use. Start listening to English radio and television programs, and converse in English with your friends and family. This too is a part of the learning experience. Online learning is supposed to be fun, so enjoy the experience of putting your newfound knowledge into practice. By doing so you will see how much you have learned and it will motivate you to complete your course."

The TOEFL Test: TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) is a test used by many colleges, universities, government agencies and exchange and scholarship programs in the US, UK and Canada as a means of evaluating the language skills of a person whose first language is not English. You can find TOEFL study guides easily online with other recommended resources listed. You may be able to access some of the sample tests and prepare with personal study. Or you may look for a class with an instructor to help you prepare for the test.

Do not repeat the subject of a sentence. Example: "My cat has fleas."" Not, ""My cat she has fleas."" When to use ""a"", ""an"", and ""the"": This is an easy-to-remember rule. Use ""a"" and ""an"" if what you are talking about can be counted. Use ""the"", or nothing at all, if your subject can not be counted. Examples: I need flour to cook this recipe. I need a cup of flour to cook this recipe. Please give me the flour. Flour is an ingredient in the recipe.

Private Tutors: Another popular method of learning English is with private tutors. The materials and methods used by ESL tutors will vary greatly and it is important to establish what material will be used and to feel comfortable with the tutor. Asking friends or other students for references can be helpful in finding a good tutor.

Write your new words in a notebook and review them for 5 minutes every day until you have mastered the words.

A combination of these English learning methods will be effective as well. You can take a summer course while staying with a home-stay host family and then arranging for private tutoring during the school year. Making an effort to use your new language skills regularly in social situations will improve your progress regardless of the program or course you are using."
