Domain Names: Choosing, Using, Buying and Managing Them

by Dan Farrell

Choose your domain name carefully. Many business people and entrepreneurs don't take this into consideration, although a domain name affects your business in many ways. Consider carefully what domain name you will use. It should be one that anyone can completely identify with the business you are carrying on. It isn't easy to change once you purchase one, so think carefully. Your domain name has two principle purposes:

 Branding your business

Help you with search engine positioning

Brand your business: To choose your domain name, you must recognize that this will be how customers see your business and thus the name must be a good one and very professional. Here are some points to keep in mind when you choose your domain name:

Make it memorable: People should be able to easily remember the name of your website so they will be more inclined to tell others about it.

Make it short and easy to spell: Make your domain name simple enough that others can spell it easily and remember it without difficulty.

It should describe your business and what you do. It should be easy to see what you are selling, what you are offering, how you can help them solve their problems.

Your domain name is your business name: because of this fact it is extremely hard to change so it is critical for your business to get this right the 1st time.

Optimizing your website: Try to include your keyword or key phrase within your domain name. This helps position you better in the search engines and make your website easy to find.

Registering your domain name:

Make a list of domain names: Now that you have your keywords you can now create some domain names. Sometimes you will find that other people may have the same ideas as you and your first choices are taken so have at least 5-10 names on your list and just go down your list until you find one that is not taken.

Go to a domain register and get your domain name registered. You can use .com or .net or .info as the suffix. And here are some terms you need to know: o Nameserver: This is your host's server. Inserting the host's DNS or server code will assure that your domain name will be found for the purpose of registration. Your website will then be published to the web for the entire world to see. o Whois is contact info on your website. This is available to the public unless you wish to make it private. Anyone at all can see it if you make it public, so if you do, make sure you don't put too much personal info in it.

Some important things to remember:

o You will find an option for registering your domain name for 1-5 years. Try to register for 2 or even 5 years, if you can, as this will make your business more credible in Google's eyes and you will attain a better Page Rank.

o {It is best to lock your domain name so that nobody can transfer it to another service or otherwise tamper with it.|Lock in your domain name so no one else can transfer it or tamper with the name.|So no one can tamper with the domain name or transfer to another service
