Moving Guide with Children

by Jennifer Strong

When you are moving to another location, it is understandable to have mixed emotions especially for your children. Keep a positive nature on moving day so it will also affect your children avoiding tantrums on that day.

This Moving Guide is a big help for your preparation with your moving, on and before the day.

Empathize with your children. Understand what they are feeling about the move; they will leave all memories from the day they were born; the children will be scared to leave everything behind and then more scared to think what lies ahead for them in their new school and neighborhood. As the day of moving approaches, your children will feel worse and worse about accepting it.

*For young children in particular, even a short distance move can feel like thousands of miles! they need your assurance that they will not lose the people behind for they can meet again sometime.

*Make sure you make arrangements with their old and new schools as early as possible. The most important thing to do before the move is to get the school records of your children from their schools. It is better if you talk to their teachers to know their behaviors in school.

*Involve your children with the preparation for moving as much as possible. Sorting through with them which toys they want to keep and which ones they don't can be good fun and gives you time to talk about the whole experience of moving.

*When you're sorting through the toys, remember to leave a couple aside to keep in the days leading up to the move and for the moving day itself so that your child has something to keep them occupied.

*The best advice if you're moving locally is to have your children stay with friends or family for the day. You need no distraction on the day of the move so give some toys or food to your children so as not to bother you with their presence.

*If you're moving long distance, having your children looked after for the day may not be possible so by keeping aside a few toys and trying to give them as much attention as possible should help.

Moving Guide with children has provided just a few points which should help you and your children to cope with the moving process.
