Types Of IT Certifications

by Ron Arora

Obtaining IT certifications is one of the best ways of boosting your income and career potential. IT designations assure employers that potential employees have the requisite knowledge, education, professional dedication and interest in pursuing a career in IT. Certifications are industry-regulated proof of in-depth knowledge and experience, a valuable addition to any resume.

Microsoft Designations

There are many computer courses offered by Microsoft to computer professionals. One of the most sought-after Microsoft designation in the U.S. is the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). This credential shows potential employers that the holder has demonstrated the ability to install, configure and troubleshoot network problems on various Windows platforms and has the ability to design, implement and administer network infrastructure to create custom business solutions.

While Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows 2000 servers are still in common use, they are outdated and no longer supported by Microsoft. The Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCTIP) course provides the necessary knowledge to address problems in more updated platforms including Exchange Server 2010, Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008.

Oracle Designations

There are six levels of designations offered by Oracle including:

- Oracle Certified Associate

- Oracle Certified Master

- Oracle Certified Professional

- Oracle Certified Expert

- Oracle Certified Special Accreditation

- Oracle Certified Specialist

Each level demonstrates a special level of knowledge, experience and proven ability.

CompTIA Courses

CompTIA provide general courses that ensure proficiency in various IT related fields. CompTIA designations include CompTIA A+, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Server+ and CompTIA Linux+.

Cisco

Cisco offers the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) designation that indicates proficiency in setting up medium to large networks including security and wireless networking. CCNP certificate holders can not only maintain networks but also build them. This is the most common Cisco designation. However, there are four other Cisco credentials including CCENT, CCNA, CCIE and CCA.
