If you are looking to hire a graphic designer you should definitely proceed with caution. There are many graphic designers who are very talented but in order to reach these folks, you need to weed through all of the "others". You can do this by creating a list of important questions that will help you get to know a designer, and their background, a little better.

1. How did you get your start in graphic design? The answer to this question will tell you how passionate the client is (or isn't) about graphic design. Whether it's something they've always wanted to do or they somehow stumbled across it and have loved it ever since, you should be able to learn a lot more about them with just this one simple question.

2. May I see your portfolio? You really should never hire any type of graphic designer or artist without first taking a look at their portfolio. The portfolio will include samples of work they have completed or worked on which will give you an idea of their style. This also gives you the opportunity to see if you feel that their type of work will work well with what you have in mind for your graphic design project.

3. Ask specific questions about the work in their portfolio. Just looking over the portfolio may not be enough. This is because you can never be sure that the designer completely finished everything on their own. They may have contributed to a piece but worked with somebody else who actually did the design. For this reason you must ask specific questions about portfolio samples. "Did you do this yourself?" or "How big of a role did you have in this particular piece?"

4. How much experience do you have? This is a must-have question for anybody looking for a graphic designer. The more experience they have the better - usually. You will feel more confident hiring somebody with years of experience verses somebody who is just starting out.

5. What software do you have experience using? Graphic design requires the use of software programs that allow you to manipulate things and create your work of art. A good graphic designer will have expertise in at least one graphic design program which could be Adobe Photoshop or Dreamweaver for example.

Hiring a graphic designer can be a bit scary but if you know what you want and you ask the right questions, you will find the perfect candidate for the job. Just remember to communicate exactly what you're looking for. The more information you give the graphic design artist, the better understanding they will have regarding what kind of design you're looking for.
