Sticking With Your New Year's Resolutions
How can you stay committed to your New Year's resolution? Studies have shown that only 12% of Americans who make New Year's resolutions actually keep them. If you've made resolutions for 2011, there are two things you should do to ensure that you stick with them: first, you need to make them part of your everyday routines, and second, you need to set attainable weekly goals. These steps are easy to apply to some of the most popular resolutions: • Lose weight / get in shape / exercise / eat healthier Incorporate this resolution into your everyday routine by moving often throughout the day - park a little further away in the parking lot, take a walk around the block during lunch, or drop off your package instead of using interoffice mail. Eat healthier by committing to making your own lunch most days and keep a stash of healthier snacks like veggies and dip at work to fight those mid-afternoon cravings. • Manage debt / save money To save at home, make up a budget that will allow you to live comfortably while still saving a little each month. Set up automatic transfers of one or two dollars a day from your checking account to your savings account every couple of weeks. It doesn't sound like much, but it will add up quickly. To save money at work, manage your purchasing and leverage your purchasing power by making sure you purchase at the minimum order value to avoid handling fees while eliminating those costly "one-off" trips to office supply stores. Choose suppliers that offer free or reduced shipping, and can delivery quickly so that you keep on-hand inventory at a minimum. • Save the earth / be more environmentally friendly To be greener at home, encourage your family members to separate and recycle paper, glass, and plastic. Eliminate bottled water. Switch out light bulbs to newer, energy-saver bulbs. Reduce your usage of paper products such as paper cups and plates. To be greener at work, use recycled copy paper and consider stationery and legal specialty products with recycled content. Minimize waste by using high-quality filing products that won't need to be replaced. Save energy by turning off the lights, heaters, or fans in your office when you're in meetings. You can keep your resolutions this year if you try to incorporate them into your daily life. And it's much easier than you think to make minor adjustments and stick with them. Need HELP?
