Methods On Avoiding A Poor Web Host

by Dirik Hameed

Check around and you'll find plenty of of business website hosting nightmare stories. Many companies have their websites hosted without knowing it by teenagers. Questioning why the website and emails just suddenly fell off the face of the earth, and their host isn't answering emails (well they won't be able to!) or telephone. And the cause? Little Johnny has had his computer taken away and been grounded for getting a detention. So, my rather hypothetical situation sounds far fetched possibly? Again, have a Google- there are far worse situations where webmasters have found themselves in a whole world of hurt. Why? Well they ended up picking the wrong web hosting company. While there's no foolproof way of picking out bad webhosts, there are some tips I will give you on typical signs on the website of the company.

Host's website has no contact address.

The distance selling laws in the UK state you must advertise an address and without it they are breaking the law. What reputable business would not provide an address to write to in the event of an issue? A business which hasn't advertised a postal address stinks of a bedroom web host.

Reckoning to have multiple datacentres of there own.

I prefer to do business with companies that are honest, well at least try and be as honest as they can. You own a little independent store, would you then try and claim you had a chain of shops nationwide? Well the same can be said for web hosts laying claim to their 'own' datacentre. Some hosts for example claim they are running a datacentre, whereas their whole system runs on one managed dedicated server. I will tell you now only a very few of the hosts actually have the resources to run a datacentre. While not having your own datacentre is not normally a bad thing. But a web host claiming they do when they don't, is generally bad news.

How long does a bad host take to respond to their emails?

Being in the 21st century, email is the choice of communication for most people. So often if you have a few pre-sales queries about a service you'd expect to be able to fire off an email with your questions and receive a response back in your inbox. So say a company did not answer the telephone, would you do business with them? Similarly if a web host takes more than a day to reply to a sales email it does not bode well. If they take that long to answer a sales email, when they can potentially earn money, how quickly will they respond when you need help? But having said that, don't be fooled by the web hosts that respond to sales emails instantly, but if you want help, they don't care.

What's the hosts English like?

A large indicator normally will be the professionalism of a web host- how does there spelling and grammar come across? You have no doubt come across websites with wrongly spelt words who claim to be the 'garetest' web host on the 'word wipe web'. If the host cannot spell or has not taken the extra time to check their website, the advertising pitch, how can you trust them to host your website?

Want to find a decent web host instead?

On the other hand there are a number of good uk business class web hosting providers. The above pointers only touch the iceberg of spotting a bad web host. Making your choice on a web host is very hard. When you are look for your quality business class web host, please make sure you do the homework. Search for reviews, talk to existing customers. Google is a fantastic tool for dishing the dirt. Also try searching the company, you never know what might come up. Remember above all, to pay monthly for your hosting so it does go wrong, and if the ugly stuff does go flying, ensure you have a backup. Good luck.
