Avoiding Morning Madness

by Tamara Jacobs

The world is divided into two groups of people: morning folk and not-morning folk. For not-morning folk, it doesn't seem to matter how many years we've been waking up early for work, the sound of our alarm is and will always be a major shock. Immediately following the shock, comes the natural impulse to hit the snooze button. After doing this a few times- irrationally telling ourselves that 10 minutes of extra sleep is far more important than leaving a window should trains be delayed or traffic bad- we find ourselves in a major rush.

People love to ask the question 'how long does it take you to get ready in the morning?' My answer is always the same: it's not the showering and maintenance part, it's choosing an outfit. If I have an outfit in mind, I only need the time it takes to put it on. If I don't, I might have to add up to 20 extra minutes to my morning routine which, when you're in a rush, is really just no bueno.

This is an even bigger issue for the fashion forward of the world who feel the need to wear an epic outfit every day of the year. There are a few ways to avoid this morning madness. The first being that you do decide on an outfit the night before, and if not the night before, then at least while you're showering. The second is having a range of basics in your wardrobe that are easy to pair and in style.

Picking basics isn't as easy as one might think. First you have to be honest with yourself about the things that you do and dress code that work encourages you to abide by. For instance if you work somewhere very casual and live a fairly laid-back lifestyle then there's no need to own loads of suits. The basics you might be interested in having include, some colourful trousers for summer, comfy jeans, a bit of plaid, a leather jacket, loafers and fun kicks. If you're encouraged to be a bit more formal, insert a few sports jackets and some linen trousers for summer and you're good to go.

Another way to individualise your look is with accessories. From hats to shades, ties to jewellery there are many ways to personalise your look. With basics in your closet and a few fun accessories to play with, getting ready in the morning should be fast and easy.
