How to Keep Your Children Safe This Halloween

by Promark Safety

Halloween is an exciting time of year for children all across the nation. From costume parties to candy to decorating pumpkins, there is no doubt a lot of fun to be had. Yet apart from the fun of it all, Halloween is another occasion where we must be on our guard, and pay particular attention to child safety and personal safety. Halloween is a time of year when our children are out on the streets at nighttime, setting the perfect scene for criminals. Despite this fact, we do not need to let the threat of danger ruin the day that provides a great deal of joy to children. We just need to be educated and prepared.
As parents, guardians, and adults who care for children, there are a number of challenges to be had when trying to keep children safe in today's fast-paced world. While we teach our children to stay away from "strangers," we should be vigilant of the fact that it is an often difficult concept for a child to grasp. It is more beneficial to teach a child how to respond to a potentially dangerous situation, as opposed to teaching them to just look out for certain types of people. A good idea may be to practice some child safety drills, alerting your child of different kinds of dangerous situations.
This Halloween, keep the following child safety and personal safety tips in mind for your family:
* Make sure that costumes are loose enough to be worn over warm clothing (as it's a generally cold time of year in most places), but not so loose that the child is tripping as he or she walks.
* Have your child choose brightly colored costumes our wear LED safety lights that will be clearly visible to those in cars. Nowadays, LED safety lights come in all different fun shapes and colors. Have your child pick a few out to wear.
* Use make-up and face paint as opposed to masks, as this can obstruct your child's vision and breathing. If your child is insistent about wearing a mask, be sure it is of good quality and provides adequate breathing room and does not obstruct his or her vision.
* Ensure that all purchased costumes are flame-resistant.
* For optimal home protection, consider staying in this Halloween and have children dress in costume to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. This is especially a good idea if you have young children.
* Do not let your child handle a knife to carve pumpkins. Consider drawing a face using markers or paint on the pumpkin instead.
* Protection in the home starts with adequate outdoor lighting. Turn on your outside light if inviting children in for candy.
* Never let your child go trick-or-treating alone, especially if under the age of 13. Even as your child gets older, try to follow along at a distance to keep an eye on him or her.
* Do not let your child eat any candy/treats that have not been thoroughly inspected by you. Throw out any treats that are not wrapped, or are torn or in loose packages, or any that have small holes in the wrappers.
