A great new resource for students

by Jeremy Burr

Well, I decided to take on a monumental task recently. I was reviewing different college themed websites to see what offered the most education related information packed into one easy to use interface. Every site I looked at lacked something, and the ones that had the most info, were the ones that were the most horribly designed and difficult to navigate. So I decided to do something about it - I created my own.

And so was born MyNextCollege.com. It started out as a forum to find out what current and prospective students really wanted to know. A common theme was that every college and University sounded great if you read their websites and brochures. I wanted to put something together that would act as a peer review not just for schools, but also teachers, classes, admissions, housing and anything in between. What better place to get accurate and relevant information that matters to a student than from other students. They don't care what your parents want out of a school and they aren't paid to say what they say. The result...honesty.

Another complaint I heard was about the ridiculously overpriced textbooks. Why is it, that every semester another $185 Calculus textbook comes out and is required for a class that covers the same material that was handled with the last edition? How much has Calculus really changed in the last 10 years? They do this of course to prevent students from being able to save money by buying used books beyond a semester or two. So I created The Exchange on the site. The Exchange is a free Classified Ads page on the MyNextCollege.com site that enables students from all over to buy, sell or trade their textbooks, computers, cars etc. and even provides a roommate search feature.

I even added a free arcade area with over 2200 free flash arcade games to play when you're supposed to be studying, (but need a break!). But the thing that I'm most proud of is the active participation of some of the members of the MyNextCollege.com community in Stanford University's Folding@home project. I started a folding team to give people a chance to do what they can to help cure Cancer, Alzheimers, Cystic Fibrosis, Parkinsons etc., and the response to this alone has made it all worth while.

So when you get a chance, come check us out and put in your two-cents worth. It might just help stop the next person from making the same mistakes you did.
