Aligarh is a district and district head quarters in the state of Utter Pradesh, located 140 km South East of New Delhi. Aligarh is world famous for the education centre Aligarh Muslim University, AMU in short. It is also called ‘Tala Nagari’ for its monopoly in lock manufacturing in India. It is a commercial centre for agriculture products like wheat, sugar-cane, corn, barley and millets. In the cultural and social life of the city Islamic influence is prominent. The earliest rulers of Aligarh were Dor Rajputs and city was known as Kol. During Muhammed Lodhi’s rule a Fort was built and named it Muhamedgarh Fort. The rule of the area centered around this Fort. The present day fort was built by the French and after the 1803 Aligarh battle the British occupied the Fort and Aligarh district was formed in 1804. During Mogul Era, Kings from other princely states used to visit the forests of Aligarh for shooting wild animals. Aligarh Muslim University was founded by Sir Sayed Ahmed Khan. In 1875 it was started as Mohamed an Anglo Oriental College in the model of Cambridge University. It grew up as a world famous centre of education. Spread over an area of 667 hectares, AMU has students from SAARC and Commonwealth countries, and students of Indian origin from Africa, Middle East and South East Asia, besides Indian students. Aligarh has many tourist attractions. Dor Fort built in 1524 by Bud Dev Dor is in ruins and a new masjid stands in its place. A minaret on top of the fort was destroyed by the British in 1861-62. Aligarh Fort or Ramgarh Fort built by Mohammed, son of Umer during the reign of Ibrahim Lodhi on a hill with 32’ ravines on all sides is maintained by AMU now. Sir Sayed Masjid now inside AMU campus, was built by Sabit Khan in 1727 in Mogul style and has a prayer hall where 1000 devotees can pray at a time, there were many hotels near to the Railway station at Aligarh There are many museums in Aligarh. Sir Sayed Academy Museum inside AMU, established in 1974 has an art gallery where activities and achievements of AMU are exhibited. In Chacha Nehru Gyan Pushpa specimens from history, geography and biology and a collection of coins, stamps and medals from different era are exhibited. Maulana Azad Library has a collection of nearly 16000 rare manuscripts and Sanskrit writings. Teerthdham Mangalayatan 5 km away is a complex of four Jain Temples. Sekha Lake 17 km from city is a picnic spot and a bird watching site. There are many good hotels in Aligarh; Ruby Hotel, Royal Residency Hotel, Melrose Inn and Mahajan Palace Hotel being a few among them. Aligarh has a busy railway station. Nearest airport at Kanpur is 142 km away.
