Wine Clubs Bring The World To Your Door
Everyone has that one vacation they have always wanted to go on; the "put it on the bucket list and hope I win the lottery" trip that has fascinated them their whole life. For people who love wine, that vacation may be through the Loire Valley of France, or a trip to experience the wines and wineries of California. Those trips far too often remain only a dream for people, but today they are finally able to do the next best thing. If they cannot go to the wine, they can at least have the wine come to them, thanks to the creation of wine of the month clubs.
For many years, there have been strict regulations and restrictions when it came to shipping wine and other alcoholic beverages. Thanks to the explosive growth in small batch wineries and distilleries and microbreweries, however, many states and even the Federal government recognize the help these small businesses need to be successful. To make these possibilities a reality, wine of the month clubs have been established by wine loving professionals to help people experience all that is exciting about the wine lifestyle.
The format of these clubs is very similar from one business to the next. They establish several different levels to choose from, based on a person's budget, tastes and desires. There is a novice or beginner level that is usually an entry level wine to help introduce people to the wine lifestyle. Higher levels may include two or three bottles per month, and usually feature select vintages, rare blends or other wines that are typically hard to find.
From that similarity comes many differences, however. Each club, in an effort to separate themselves from the competition, chooses a certain specific focus to become their identity. Many clubs pick a particular varietal - perhaps Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon - and each month, offer a different selection of it from around the world, or perhaps even blends that predominately feature that particular varietal. Other clubs instead choose a specific region, like Southern Italy or the Santa Barbara wineries, and choose wines that best represent these areas. Finally, some clubs focus on wines from a particular year, or specialize in hard to find wines from around the world.
Whatever their focus is, each club then delivers their wines on a monthly basis directly to their customers. This convenience also takes away the guesswork many people have when they are at a wine store wondering what bottle they should try next. Best of all, another common trait between most wine of the month clubs is that they offer their customers discounts on ordering additional bottles of a feature wine. That way if there is a bottle they are particularly fond of, they will be able to make sure their wine rack is stocked with it so they can share it with their friends.
