Why Stationery Is Better Than Technology
The pen is mightier than the laptop…
Since the technological revolution got underway it has systematically hunted down each and every piece of stationery and lots of other kinds of equipment and has made an attempt at providing a more high tech version of the same thing. Despite this, stationery is still just as popular as ever, so where has technology failed? Well, it is not necessarily that technology has failed; it is more that stationery has so many key properties that technology is unable to reproduce that it will never be completely redundant.

Physical Appeal

For one thing stationery has a kind of tangible appeal that computers will never quite match. Writers for example often feel that the feeling of pressing pen or pencil to paper provides an organic attachment to what is being written that a keyboard and screen fails to reproduce. Likewise, receiving an email will never have the same physical impact of receiving a letter, ripping it open and reading the contents. Getting a paper letter for some people is almost a novel experience and one which certainly holds more appeal than an email ghosting into your screen.

Electricity

One unavoidable flaw in all technology is that it all runs on electricity. If the world suddenly fell into darkness and all power sources ran out, the world's information would still flow through the humble use of stationery. When your £2000 tablet PC runs out of battery while you are writing a report your neighbour beavering away with a pencil and paper will be fine.

Cost

Indeed the cost of technology also makes stationery that much more appealing. While a range of computer accessories exist that could easily help you complete a task, if these items cost you hundreds of pounds when a low tech stationery based version would do the same job but a bit slower, the benefits of stationery over technology is clear.

Security

Finally, there has been a spate of hacking incidents of late around the world as online profiles and accounts are stolen en-masse. If all you data was on paper and ink and locked safely in a filing cabinet in a concrete building, chances are you would feel a lot safer.

Despite all these examples of how stationery can be better than its technological equivalents, the modern synergy of stationery mixed with technology is here to stay. The physical and technological world will as time progresses slowly combine to a greater extent but will certainly never be as one, simply because we are physical beings and until we have plugs in our heads we will always need that bridge.
