Personal vehicles usually are small cars and it has proved to be a reliable mode of private transportation. These cars have become popular due to the excellent fuel economy, narrower roads and lower price. These cars have contributed in a major way towards the automobile industry and have prominent overseas manufacturing companies too establishing their service centre, production, and sales in the country. These cars were introduced in the United States before the beginning of World War II. Small vars are known as compact cars in North America where these cars are smaller than mid-size cars but larger than supermini cars. Across Europe this class of car is known as the C-segment car. The size of the car ranges from 4400mm and 4750mm long for convertibles, 4100mm and 4450mm long for hatchbacks. Small family cars based on sports utility vehicle design range from 4400mm to 4750mm in the international based models and for the U.S. models it is 4200mm to 4500mm. The term compact was adopted by the U.S. automobile industry. It was between the 1958 and 1960 when the modern compact cars were greatly expanded. Consumers today seek vehicles in the U.K. that are fuel efficient as well as fun to drive and for this reason the sale of small cars can jump to 30%. Manufacturers are coming up with new offerings and without any tincture of doubt they also want to be in this category but if prices at the pump fall significantly the growth may not be so brisk. According to the auto data in 2010 these smaller versions of cars made up about one third of the overall car sales.

Over the next few years the market for small and mid-sized cars is poised well as the fuel prices were predicted to drop in 2011 but it is not expected to create an impact on the market of other vehicles. The British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 until 2000 made small cars, which are in great demand in the markets.
