Eliminating Addiction Via Hypnotherapy

by Ericka Lopez

The process of hypnotherapy dates back 100 years ago and was discovered accidentally by doctors prior to surgery. It's a form of treatment which uses hypnosis to control patients' behavior by either inducing prolonged sleep or letting the patient fall into a trance like stage. In the 1900, few anaesthetic medicines were available and many die not due to the complications of surgical operations but because of the effects of anesthesia in the body. Fear towards any operation is often experienced by patients. The use of hypnotism then became popular as a way to alleviate fear to many people all over the world. This kind of therapy is especially helpful among patients who have allergies to anesthesia and thus needs alternative measures to reduce the feeling of pain.

Hypnotherapy became officially accepted as a type of treatment in 1955 by the British Medical Association and the American Medical Association accepted its use in 1955. Hypnosis is considered also as an alternative form of treatment for many health issues like pain management and weight loss. In the current era, hypnotherapy has been incorporated in several treatment programs. As a form of treatment, it can help people control cravings and addiction like heavy drinking of alcohol, smoking and drugs. Many of those who suffer from substance abuse have problems with their volition to quit intake of alcohol or drugs. This type of therapy focuses on controlling the will of an individual leading to less cravings and further abstinence from the alcohol or drug.

There are drug rehabilitation programs that includes hypnotherapy in their treatment program. A specialist makes use of hypnotic induction and the patient falls into a sleep like phase but the mind is alert. This technique however must only be used when all other options have been futile. The patient who is under hypnosis is more likely to participate and follow suggestions made by the specialist specially in avoiding intake of drugs or alcohol. The main objective on this type of therapy is on the subconscious level of the mind. When hypnosis is carried out properly, the patient will be given instructions to follow and the desired positive behaviour will be achieved.

Hypnotism has been proven as an effective type of treatment in drug treatment programs. There are many centers that provide hypnotherapy as part of the entire treatment process. But like all other treatments, one patient is different from another and so every case should be approached in a personalized level. There are also side effects involve in the use of hypnotherapy but these effects usually fades out over time when hypnosis is no longer used. Caution should always be practiced regardless of the treatment method used.
